One of the perks of dating a Greek is the incredible glimpse into the country that many travelers don’t usually see. This man truly swept me off my feet and has taken me to some of the most romantic places in his entire country (and honestly the world). We have explored hidden villages together, walked along the most pristine beaches and marveled at extraordinary historical sites. With his help, I’ve put together a list of the best places to visit in Greece for couples, highlighting some of the most romantic and enchanting spots in the country so you and your partner can create unforgettable memories together too.

Athens

Best places to visit in greece for couples

The capital city of Greece is an incredible cultural center. From historical sites to museums, there’s no shortage of things to do and see. My boyfriend and I have gotten lost in the neighborhoods surrounding the Acropolis and we had our first kiss under the moon rise on Lycabettus Hill. We first bonded over our shared enthusiasm for history, so Athens is one of our favorite places in the world. There are many intimate restaurants surrounded by history that are perfect for food lovers and you can wander around ancient sites that are sure to inspire awe. If you and your partner are cultural enthusiasts or adventure seekers, then Athens is a wonderful getaway.

Romantic Highlights: The Acropolis, Lycabettus Hill, Cape Sounion

Nafplio

Views from the Fortress of Palamidi.

Nafplio is a coastal city in the Peloponnese and is known as one of the most romantic cities in Greece. My boyfriend and I went on one of our first dates here and watched the sunset from one of the many waterfront restaurants. It was honestly one of the most memorable experiences I have from Greece. The city is filled with ancient walls, medieval castles, Ottoman fountains and Venetian buildings. And don’t miss the incredible archaeological sites of Tiryns and Mycenae nearby! It’s something else to get lost in thousands of years worth of history with the one you love.

Romantic Highlights: Archeological Site of Tiryns, Archeological Site of Mycenae, Fortress of Palamidi, Nafplio Port

Santorini

The famous village of Oia at sunset.

Santorini is definitely one of the best places to visit in Greece for couples, it’s probably on many couples’ travel bucket list. And it makes sense. With its pristine white buildings, crystal-clear waters, and stunning sunsets, Santorini offers an unparalleled romantic experience. The island’s unique landscape was formed by a volcanic eruption in ancient times and is unlike any other, with dramatic cliffs and caldera views that create a breathtaking backdrop. Watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, is a magical experience that will leave you and your partner in awe. Trust me, it really doesn’t get anymore romantic than Santorini.

Romantic Highlights: Thera, Oia, Mirador de Chapel of Archangels, Santorini hot springs, Akrotiri Lighthouse

Naxos

A quick kiss before the sun goes down at the Temple of Apollo.

Naxos is an island that is located in the center of the Cyclades and it’s truly a hidden gem when it comes to romantic getaways in Greece. There are miles of coastlines filled with incredible beaches and you can get lost in the picturesque streets of Chora (the island’s capital). The highlight for my boyfriend and I was definitely watching the sunset from the Temple of Apollo. We have seen some amazing sunsets around the world together but standing near ancient history as the orange sun fell below the waves is something I’ll never forget. There are also many shops, bars and restaurants for couples to explore and enjoy. Naxos is a great option for couples looking for a low-key romantic getaway that doesn’t have the same hefty price tag of Santorini.

Romantic Highlights: Temple of Apollo, Chora, Venetian Castle of Naxos, Agios Prokopios Beach

Astypalea

Sunset views of the town from the Castle of Astypalea.

Also known as the “Butterfly Island”, Astypalea has to be one of the best places to visit in Greece for couples. Although it is located in the Dodecanese islands, it’s white and blue buildings and windmills along the islands’ cliffs are reminiscent of the Cyclades. You and your love can enjoy extraordinary views, some of the bluest waters you’ll ever see, and plenty of incredible food. Astypalea is a quiter island and it was the perfect place for a subtle, yet romantic week away when I visited with my boyfriend.

Romantic Highlights: Chora, Castle of Astypalea, Paralia Vatses, Church Agios Fokas

Symi

Walk along the waterfront or enjoy a romantic boat ride with your love on Symi.

Symi is a small, picturesque island also located in the Dodecanese islands. It is renowned for its striking neoclassical architecture, stunning waters, and unspoiled natural beauty. Because Symi is smaller and more secluded, the entire island exudes an exclusive air of intimacy. The town is different from the classic white and blue buildings you probably think of when the “Greek islands” come to mind, with bright, colorful buildings lining the coast and cliffs instead. Symi might be small, but you and your partner will never run out of things to do, from exploring shops and cafes, to wandering around the island by boat, to holding hands on the beach. It’s truly a romantic and intimate place to visit.

Romantic Highlights: Gialos, Panormitis Monastery, Paralía Agíou Nikoláou, Agios Georgios Dysalona Beach, Marathounda Beach

Amorgos

Cheesy couple pictures are our favorite.

The easternmost island of the Cyclades has to be one of the best places to visit in Greece for couples. And for good reason. Amorgos was an unexpected delight when my boyfriend and I visited for a few days. The island offers a blend of natural beauty, charming villages, and secluded beaches that definitely helped set the mood for our entire visit. Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or simply a chance to reconnect with your partner, this stunning island is sure to capture both of your hearts and leave you with some unforgettable memories.

Romantic Highlights: Chora, Monastery of Hozoviotissa, Mouros Beach, Shipwreck of Olympia, Port of Katapola

Milos

Welcome to the “planet” of Milos.

Now we head over to the southwesternmost island of the Cyclades. Milos is definitely an underrated island that many couples might overlook. The natural beauty of Milos is so unique, I guarantee you’ve never seen anything like it. Seriously, it’s like you’re on another planet. You and your S.O. can hike volcanoes, sail around the stunning coastline, or explore ancient catacombs and mines. And the iconic sculpture, “Venus de Milo”, was discovered on this very island! It’s honestly the perfect getaway for any couple.

Romantic Highlights:  Sarakiniko Beach, Kleftiko, Fyriplaka Beach, Venetian Castle of Milos

Obviously, Greece offers some of the most romantic locations that are sure to ignite the passion in any couple. In the end, it’s really not about where you go, but who you go with. It’s the shared experiences and memories that couples create together that make a romantic trip unforgettable. So whether you’re exploring the hidden beaches of Milos or savoring a romantic dinner in a seaside taverna on Symi, make sure to cherish the time you spend with your partner and create memories that will last a lifetime. Greece is just the backdrop; the real romance is found in both of you.

After being bitten by the travel bug in 2021 during my first trip to Greece, I decided to completely alter the course of my life. For so long, I was under the belief that I had to go to college, get a good job, earn enough money, save up for practical things like a house and car, and then maybe travel if I found the time. Well, taking a spontaneous trip on my own terms made me realize there is no right way and wrong way to live life, and I am choosing to do something with mine I only thought was possible in my dreams: travel the world. It is my hope that through my stories I can inspire more people to take that same, life-changing trip to the place of their dreams!
