So you’re planning your own Mamma Mia! trip to Skopelos Island. You’ve probably watched the movie countless times, you’re getting ready to book your flights, but one big question remains: Where’s the best area to stay in Skopelos?
That’s where this guide comes in. Figuring out the logistics of your dream getaway can feel overwhelming, but trust me, it’s all part of the adventure! (or as Bill would say, ‘It’s good for ya’)
Skopelos isn’t just a pretty island from the movies. It’s a diverse place with more than one side to discover. There’s blue harbors, hidden beaches and unexpectedly beautiful pine forests and hiking trails. Different parts of the island feel like entirely separate worlds, and all of them are beautiful.
Want to dive into local culture, unwind in peace, or stay close to those iconic Mamma Mia! spots? This guide breaks down the best area to stay in Skopelos so you can find your perfect match.

Best Time to Visit

First thing’s first: When’s the best time to visit? Now, I’ve spent a total of almost 6 months in Greece over the past 4 years and have been to 27 Islands, so as a frequent traveler to the country the number one question I get asked by friends and family is: ‘When should I visit?’
Skopelos is a bit different than visiting a super popular island like Mykonos or Santorini, as these islands are absolutely PACKED July-August. They each get more than 2 million and 3.4 million annual visitors, respectively.
However, these islands tend to be more popular for American tourists thanks to social media and ease of access.
Skopelos is a much less popular island with 50,000 visitors a year BUT it takes a lot more effort to get to (Check out my guide here on different ways to get to Skopelos!). August is a popular time for Greeks to travel, especially the week of August 15th, so I would avoid traveling this week if possible to avoid bigger crowds.
But overall, if you want the fewest crowds, I always recommend booking in June or September. Since Skopelos isn’t as popular as many of the Cyclades Islands, the tourist season tends to be a bit shorter. But that also means you can visit during Greece’s “peak tourist season” and still be able to enjoy the island’s beauty without massive crowds.
The weather tends to be best in September as the days aren’t as hot and the water is still warm from the summer heat.
Where Should You Stay?

Now let’s get into it. You know when you’re going to Skopelos, you’re flights are booked, the next thing you need to do is book your accommodations. Keep scrolling to discover the best area to stay in Skopelos for you.
As you read, I’ve also included both my personal accommodation recommendations and those highly recommended by locals and friends who know the island inside and out. Skopelos offers everything: luxury, convenience, or a quiet retreat. No matter what you’re looking for, there’s a perfect spot waiting for you.
1. Skopelos Town (Chora)

Skopelos Town, also known as Chora, is not just the capital of the island but is also its vibrant heart. It’s home to around 2,000 residents, just over half of the island’s population. Skopelos Town is straight out of a postcard, with its iconic whitewashed houses cascading down the hills towards the sea.
The narrow, winding cobblestone streets are filled with shops, cafés, and guesthouses that are just so fun to wander and get lost in. I would definitely say Skopelos Town is a top contender for the best area to stay in Skopelos for it’s size and accessibility.
One of the main reasons to consider staying in Skopelos Town is its convenience. If you don’t want to rent your own vehicle, this is the ideal location to base yourself. The town is a transport hub, with buses departing regularly from the harbor, especially during the summer months, connecting you to the island’s main beaches and villages, going all the way up to Glossa and Loutraki. It’s also the island’s main port, so you will more than likely ferry to and from here.
If you’d prefer a more private mode of transportation, taxis are also readily available. The waterfront is lined with a wide variety of restaurants, bars, and cafés, giving you plenty of options to enjoy the local food while soaking in the stunning sea views.
While the town’s own beach may not be its standout feature (I will admit), its accessibility and atmosphere make Chora a great option for those looking for the best area to stay in Skopelos while being able to explore the island with ease.
Favorite Accommodations in Skopelos Town

- Skopelos Village Hotel (€€€): Skopelos Village hotel is a well-known 5-Star hotel located in the town. It’s a short walk from the main town and offers memorable views of the sea and village.
- Pasithea Skopelos Retreat (€€€): This gorgeous retreat is only a short walk from Skopelos Town. It has stunning views of the port and town, has modern amenities and appliances, and the staff are known to be extremely hospitable.
- Pansion Prodromina (€€): Pansion Prodromina is located further in the heart of the town and lies roughly 1000 feet away from the main port. There are plenty of shops, cafés and restaurants within walking distance.
- Skopelos Holidays Hotel & Spa (€€): Skopelos Holidays Hotel is a 5-Star hotel without the 5-Star price tag. It’s located about a mile away from the port and includes a spa offering an array of relaxing treatments.
- Regina Hotel (€): This family-run hotel is right in Skopelos Town and a 5 minute walk from the main port.
- Hotel Anelli (€): Hotel Anelli is also a family-owned hotel in the heart of Skopelos Town. The port’s popular bars, restaurants, and cafés are only a short walk away.
2. Glossa

If you’re seeking a more authentic experience (and serene!), Glossa is often considered the best area to stay in Skopelos for those wanting to escape the crowds.
Located high above Loutraki Port in the northwest of the island, this peaceful village offers a unique experience for everyone. With its winding cobblestone streets and relaxed atmosphere, even during the height of summer, Glossa feels untouched by the hustle and bustle of more popular Greek destinations.
Glossa is known for its spectacular panoramic views. On a clear day, you can see as far as Skiathos Town and the Pelion peninsula, making this a perfect spot for those who appreciate breathtaking sunsets and vistas.
The village also has a handful of restaurants and coffee shops where you can enjoy traditional Greek cuisine with a view. Agnanti restaurant was constantly recommended to us as one of the most romantic restaurants on the island. I can attest that my boyfriend and I’s sunset dinner here was supreme.
Though Glossa offers tranquility and charm, it is more remote from Skopelos’ most famous beaches, like Kastani, Panormos, and Stafylos. However, with its own port in Loutraki and easy access to ferries, Glossa is still a convenient and beautiful place to stay.
If you want to experience the less-traveled side of the island, Glossa just might be the best area to stay in Skopelos.
Favorite Accommodations in Glossa

- Villa Soultani (€€€): Here, you will have beautiful views of the mountains and surrounding sea. You can take in the scenery in the balcony or explore the winding streets of the historic village nearby.
- Horizon Studios (€€): Horizon Studios is conveniently located in Glossa and just a short walk away from the town’s local shops and restaurants. It also offers unforgettable views and, if you bring a car, there is free parking on the premises too!
- Rita’ s House (€): For a more traditional and authentic experience, Rita’s House in Glossa is a great option. Not to mention, it also offers stunning views of the sea and port below, in addition to unmatched hospitality from the owners.
3. Loutraki Village

Loutraki is Skopelos‘ second port and is located right below Glossa. Okay, okay, Loutraki is technically part of the settlement of Glossa, but I’ve noticed that many ‘Best Area to Stay in Skopelos‘ lists combine staying in Glossa and Loutraki.
But this was where we stayed for 5 of our 7 nights on the island and I’m here to make an argument for it alone because we had an absolutely INCREDIBLE stay in Loutraki Village. And it’s best to take a car or catch a bus to Glossa Village from Loutraki. Sure you can walk, if you’re fine walking 40 minutes up hill to the village.
While Loutraki Village may be small, it is filled with so much character, and just because it’s a port town, it hasn’t lost its charm. There are seaside restaurants, cafés, bakeries, markets and coffee shops, as well as a small beach near the port.
Really the only downside to staying in Loutraki Village is it gets a little crowded when the daily ferries arrive BUT because we were always out and about during the day, we never ran into an issue. And you’ll deal with the same issue on a larger scale if you stay in Skopelos Town, as it’s the bigger town with a larger, more popular port.
I definitely recommend renting a car if you plan on staying in Loutraki, as it is a bit far from the popular beaches and sites of the island, but there are 4 buses running throughout the high season from Skopelos Town to Loutraki port.
Favorite Accommodations in Loutraki

- Natura Luxury Boutique Hotel (€€€): This boutique hotel is right on the port and offers a pool, sea views, breakfast, and modern amenities. If you’re looking for a bougier experience away from the crowds, this hotel is perfect.
- Aegean Diamonds Boutique Villas (€€): These boutique villas are great for any medium budget travelers and/or families and couples. It’s also super close to the port, restaurants, cafés, and more.
- Aegean Wave (€€): Another great option with beautiful views right next to the main walkway along the water. This one was recommended to me by a friend because the hosts go above and beyond for their guests and she couldn’t stop talking about what a great stay she had here!
- Nina’s Garden (€): If Nina’s Garden is still available, BOOK IT. This is where my boyfriend and I stayed for a majority of our trip. It was super affordable, within walking distance to the port, plenty of parking, it has modern appliances and amenities (including a washer!), and an extremely hospitable host. Seriously, this is were we will be staying every time we come back to Skopelos.
4. Agnontas

Agnontas is another great spot if you’re looking for a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path experience. It’s the best area to stay in Skopelos for nature lovers and those seeking quiet relaxation.
This hamlet on the island’s southern coast is home to fewer than 80 residents year-round. But during the summer months it comes alive to offer a few incredible culinary hotspots and easy access to some of Skopelos’ most pristine beaches.
Dining in Agnontas is honestly a highlight. We tried Mouria Fish Tavern and had fresh seafood straight from the surrounding waters and a fresh Greek salad all right next to the beach. There’s a coffee house right by the tavern where you can grab a quick breakfast and coffee from before heading out to explore the natural beauty around you.
While Agnontas does lack the number of shops and services of the larger towns, it more than makes up for it with its tranquil atmosphere and proximity to stunning beaches like Limnonari, which is just a short walk away.
If you’re looking for an even more secluded spot, Cape Amarantos is a 25-minute walk away, where the island’s iconic pine trees hang over the rocks, overlooking hidden coves. Plus, with a small bus stop located at the port, it’s easy to reach other villages and beaches on the island (including Skopelos Town) if you decide to skip out on renting a car.
For a truly serene getaway, Agnontas might be the best area for you to stay in Skopelos.
Favorite Accommodations in Agnontas

- Agnontas Luxury Villas (€€€): For the most luxurious option in this quiet hamlet, you won’t have to look any further than these gorgeous villas. Each villa has two bedrooms and the property is just across the street from the beach and popular restuarants.
- Myrto’s House (€€): Mytro’s House is a short walk away from the beach and offers a bit more privacy from the main area. It has a beautiful garden and balcony to enjoy coffee or a glass of wine in addition to free parking on the property.
- Kallisti Seaside Studios (€): This is a fantastic budget-friendly option right by the main beach. It’s quiet, simple, and many guests love the kind and hospitable hosts.
- Lithanemon (€): For couples and families looking for a budget-friendly option in Agnontas, check out Lithanemon. Here, you can enjoy the pool, well-equipped kitchens, and a big garden with a barbecue.
5. Neo Klima

Neo Klima is one of the more recent settlements on Skopelos, founded in 1981 after the original village of Klima was destroyed by an earthquake. However, just because Neo Klima is a newer town on Skopelos that does NOT give it reason to be overlooked.
It lies between green pine forests and the blue Aegean Sea, and it offers stunning views and a very peaceful atmosphere. I think it’s quickly becoming a top contender for the best area to stay in Skopelos. Located about 12 miles (19 km) west of Skopelos Town, this village is perfect for those looking to enjoy a more tranquil experience without sacrificing access to the island’s best beaches.
Speaking of, Neo Klima is home to several beaches, including the main village beach and the popular Hovolo Beach, which was voted one of the best beaches in Greece by Telegraph! With a mix of pebbles and sand, these beaches offer sandbeds, showers, and everything you need for a relaxing day by the sea.
For adventurous visitors, the nearby forest-covered mountains provide excellent hiking opportunities, with several scenic trails accessible from the village. For the best recommendations on hiking, I recommend asking the locals of the village!
Not only are many locals extremely hospitable and kind, but in my experience, they are always more than happy to suggest some of the most memorable experiences.
The village has a small, yet vibrant selection of accommodations, taverns, and local shops, offering traditional Greek cuisine and island specialties like Skopelos Pie, local cheeses, and olive oil (make sure you try these at least once while you’re on the island!).
If you’re looking for a peaceful base with easy access to beaches and nature, Neo Klima is an excellent choice for your stay in Skopelos.
Favorite Accommodations in Neo Klima

- Anna Maria – Vanessa Apartments (€€): These apartments are great for couples and are close to some of the most popular beaches nearby. You can also walk to markets, restaurants, and other shops in the area.
- Lilian Beachfront Apartments (€€): These central apartments offer balconies that show off the gorgeous sea views for mid-budget travelers. The popular beach, Hovolo, is a short walk away, as well as shops and restaurants.
- Nina Apartments (€): An even more affordable option in Neo Klima is Nina Apartments. It’s a 5 minute walk away from the beach and some cool cafés, restaurants and bars.
- Dafni Studios (€): Another nice stay close to the beach, Danfi Studios is also a short 3 minute walk away from the town’s bus stop that connects to Skopelos Town. It’s a great option if you decide not to rent a vehicle.
6. Stafylos

Stafylos is GORGEOUS. It’s the perfect retreat for those who want to stay close to the beach while enjoying easy access to Skopelos Town.
It’s just 2.5 miles (4 km) from the island’s main hub and offers a serene, laid-back atmosphere with breathtaking beaches. If you’re searching for the best area to stay in Skopelos where natural beauty meets convenience, Stafylos could be your ideal spot.
The crown jewel of the area is Stafylos Beach, famous for its crystal-clear waters and golden sand. Just a short walk along a scenic trail leads you to Velanio Beach; but be warned, this is a nudist beach so it’s perfect for those looking for a bit more seclusion.
The restaurants and businesses in Stafylos are seasonal, but they are some of the best on the island during the summer months, offering traditional Greek cuisine with fresh, local ingredients.
With its proximity to Skopelos Town, as well as its stunning beaches and top-notch dining, Stafylos is a hidden gem that will offer you an unforgettable stay.
Favorite Accommodations in Stafylos

- Pablo’s Resort (€€€): Best for bigger groups or families, Pablo’s resort is an entire house located about a 15 minute walk away from Stafylos Beach. If you’re looking for a larger, more private property in Stafylos, Pablo’s resort might your best option.
- Irida Apartments (€€): Irida Apartments is less than a 5 minute walk from Stafylos Beach and the nearby tavern. There’s also free parking on the premises and plenty of room for families traveling together.
- Betsanis Stafylos Apartments (€): Stafylos Center and Beach are within easy walking distance from Betsanis Stafylos Apartments. It’s a budget-friendly option if you want to be close to the main center of the island while still enjoying a tranquil getaway.
- Mando Beachfront (€): This is probably my favorite choice in Stafylos because of the easy beach access. Located on a hill overlooking the beach, it’s an affordable and convenient option (especially for couples!).
7. Panormos

If you’re searching for the best area to stay in Skopelos that offers both beauty and tranquility, Panormos should be high on your list. Located on the island’s west coast, about 9 miles (15 km) from Skopelos Town, Panormos is a peaceful beach town that kinda gives the same vibes as Agnontas and is also great for families!
Its coastline is framed by crystal-clear waters and pine forests, creating a painting-like backdrop that invites you to unwind. The sunsets here are truly spectacular, where you’ll see vibrant hues across the sky a perfect way to end a day of island exploration.
Panormos is ideal for those who want a quiet retreat without sacrificing convenience. The area is well-equipped with accommodations, restaurants, and cafés, and is popular among tourists for good reason. The beachfront is lined with family-owned tavernas, where you can enjoy a delicious meal with a view.
If you’re in the mood for more beach-hopping, a short drive will take you to the nearby beaches of Kastani (the Mamma Mia! beach) and Milia.
So if you’re seeking the perfect mix of relaxation and accessibility, Panormos is one of the best areas to stay in Skopelos.
Favorite Accommodations in Panormos

- Panormos Beach Hotel (€€): This hotel is close to the beach and beachfront restaurants. It also has a pool and outdoor bar to relax at.
- Psarianos Beachfront Apartments (€€): These apartments are perfectly located right by the beach and offer a quiet and serene atmosphere. They’re great for you mid-budget travelers.
- Villa Sandra (€): This villa is located about half a mile away from the main beach and restaurants but it perfect for those looking for a comfortable and close option without breaking the bank.
Final Thoughts
It goes without saying that Skopelos is truly one of Greece’s hidden gems.
Its natural beauty, crystal-clear waters, and authentic villages make it a destination unlike any other in the country. You can stay in Skopelos Town, the peaceful hillside village of Glossa, or somewhere beachy like Panormos or Neo Klima. No matter where you land, you’re in for the trip of a lifetime.
